University of Vaasa: Dynamic bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Data Architecture


Data collection and analysis may be today’s hottest buzzwords but the University of Vaasa’s industry partners have found a crucial lack of activities making the data valuable. Data Architecture deals with increasing the value of the data for the user. Since data is fragmented and scattered around many data sources without a link to the context of a use case, there is a need for contextual data integration, engineering and system design. In other words, Data Architecture designs how the data is transformed into context-based information.

To design data engineering in different use case contexts, Data Architecture links data warehousing and business intelligence, bringing in methods from software engineering. Due to a high number of internal and external data sources, and large volume of data, Data Architecture is closely related to distributed systems and computation like big data.

The use case context varies by the scale of the specified system. For instance, data engineering design can be used in the use context of power sources (e.g. hydrogen engine, or electric battery) or the entire regional network of a large number of distributed power sources as a smart grid.

To summarise, Data Architecture provides a systemic picture and detailed blueprints for data management systems. The systemic picture includes assessment of services provided to the customer – such as technology service, information system service, or business service. The systemic picture also includes a depiction of internal and external data sources, and interfaces that enable the service provision. The detailed blueprints design a plan to integrate, centralise, protect and maintain the data management system that creates value for the customer. This allows customers (internal or external) to access critical information in the right place, at the right time.

The new education programme by University of Vaasa is focused on data science; data management, data warehousing and business intelligence; cloud computing; data science engineering and big-data engineering; advanced big-data programming; and multi-thread concurrent computing.

Qualified candidates with research specialisation in one or more of the following fields are encouraged to apply: advanced ICT and data-analytics based operation; future- proof, cyber-secure and resilient ICT solutions; 5G/6G communication, edge and cloud computing; new data sources including geospatial data; AI/ML techniques with platforms for collaborative and intelligent operation and planning; information and systems sciences (relating to smart applications, large scale and distributed sensing, optimisation, control, machine learning, and data science); planning of future integrated and resilient systems (e.g. power systems); and design of information and systems sciences, (e.g. relating to smart grid applications and electrical engineering appreciation).
