Joint Entrance Examination or (JEE) is an all India common engineering entrance examination conducted for admission to various engineering Colleges/Courses in India. The test takes place in 2 stages – JEE Main 2020 and the JEE Advanced. While JEE Main 2020, tests the candidate’s capability and in depth knowledge of their subjects as a preliminary stage on national level, JEE Advanced is recognized internationally as one of the most challenging engineering admission tests.
Since 2019, National Testing Agency (NTA) announced that JEE Main will be held in online mode only and twice a year. The first attemot is held in the month of january and the second one in the month of April. The best scores of the candidaes out of both the attempst is considered for preparing the All India Rank (AIR) List.

OBC-NCL-PwD | 1,782 | |
SC | 32,010 | Total 33,000 |
SC-PwD | 990 | |
ST | 16,005 | Total 16,500 |

This will be your guide which will keep you on the right track. Starting preparing without knowing the syllabus and the pattern can be severe loss of time.
Name of the program | Mode of the exam |
BE/B.Tech. | Computer Based Examination |
B.Arch./B .Planning | Computer Based Examination (except for Drawing test) |
Tip #2. Understand Exam Syllabus Weightage
The questions paper consists of questions from the following subjects
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Mathematics
Now let us also see how questions are distributed in the question paper.
The three topics also commonly called PCM carry equal marks/percentage out of 100%, means almost a 33.33% to each subject, however, their percentage varies internally:-
Chemistry | Percentage | Physics | Perentage | Mathematics | Percentage |
Organic Chemistry | 38% | Mechanics | 27% | Algebra | 33% |
Physical Chemistry | 32% | Modern Mechanics | 18% | Differential Calculus and Coordinate Geometry | 16% |
Inorganic Chemistry | 30% | Wave optics and Electromagnetism | 15% | Integral calculus, vector and 3D geometry and Trigonometry | 8-14% each |
Electrostatics, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics | 40% |
So here you have seen that what the exam structure looks like, now you need a good plan to execute it.
Tip #3. Act Now
JEE Main 2020 aspirants have enough time to think which subjects they need to work upon. Make a strategy and Build a good timetable and follow it religiously. Start with chemistry it takes the least of the time and with one subject already covered will give you fuel of enthusiasm to carry on.
Here are the topics you can cover subject wise first.
- Chemistry- Alcohol, Aldehyde Ketone, Chemical Bonding, Coordination Compounds, Chemical Thermodynamics, Ether, General Organic chemistry, Phenol, Redox Reactions, s-block and p-block elements, Solutions, and Solid State etc.
- Physics- Electrostatics, Heat & Thermodynamics, Laws of Motion, Magnetic Effect of Current & Magnetism, Ray Optics, Rotational Motion, Simple Harmonic Motion, Wave Motion, and Wave Optics etc.
- Mathematics- Applications of Derivatives, Circles, Complex Numbers, Definite Integration, Matrices & Determinants, Probability, Sequences & Series, Three-Dimensional Geometry, Theory of Equations, and Vectors etc.
NOTE- It is extremely important to master the theoretical concepts because only those with clear basics can tackle the all sorts of numerical with ease.
Tip #4. Which books to consider?

- 38 years chapterwise topicwise solved papers by Amit M.Agarwal
For Physics
- Concepts of Physics by HC Verma
- 38 years chapterwise topicwise solved papers by DC Pandey
For Chemistry
- NCERT Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry by OP Tandon
- Physical Chemistry by N. Avasthi
- Inorganic Chemistry by VK Jaiswal + JD Lee
Tip #5. Avoid Social Media / Friends
Any aspirant who is serious about their studies must stay try to keep away from the social media distractions such as Facebook and Mobile distractions like Whatsapp for this 1 year, but you could always Join useful Facebook groups and Google+ communities like quora to keep a tab on what other students are upto – how are they preparing differently.
